Heading to Korea? Here's What to Buy at Olive Young for Acne-Prone Skin

ClearSkin Daily

Getting an appointment with a dermatologist in the US can mean waiting months — and without insurance coverage, a single visit can cost hundreds of dollars. I've worked as a licensed esthetician in California for nearly 19 years, and one thing I hear all the time from clients is: "I wish I'd taken care of it sooner."

That's exactly why I started ClearSkin Daily. This post is for anyone who wants to manage early-stage acne at home — and especially for those of you heading to Korea and planning a stop at Olive Young.

Read the Ingredients, Not the Price Tag

Before we get into product recommendations, I want to say something that will save you money: an expensive product is not always a good product. When shopping for acne-targeted skincare, the first thing you should look at is the ingredient list — not the packaging, not the brand name, and not the price.

Here are the three key ingredients to look for — and what to know about each one:

① Salicylic Acid (BHA)

Salicylic acid penetrates into the pore and dissolves the buildup inside — making it especially effective for blackheads and whiteheads. If you have oily skin or deal with clogged pores regularly, this ingredient is your best friend. Use 2–3 times a week. Always follow with SPF the next morning.

② Niacinamide

Niacinamide calms active inflammation and helps fade the dark spots that acne leaves behind. It's gentle enough for sensitive skin too. Start with a product in the 5–10% range — concentrations above 10% can cause irritation for some people. The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% is the most accessible option and a fraction of the price of many Korean beauty alternatives.

③ Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil has natural antibacterial properties that help suppress acne-causing bacteria. Most effective and safest at 5% concentration or lower — higher concentrations can cause redness or irritation. Dilute with a carrier oil before applying to skin — never apply undiluted. A few drops mixed with a non-comedogenic moisturizer is an effective spot treatment.

⚠️ Ingredients to Avoid

Watch out for coconut oil and isopropyl myristate. If either appears near the top of a product's ingredient list, skip it for acne-prone skin — both can clog pores and worsen breakouts. This applies at Olive Young AND anywhere else.

Three Categories to Shop at Olive Young

① Serums & Ampoules — Your First Line of Defense

This is the most important category. When you feel a breakout coming on, this is where you act. Look for serums containing salicylic acid or niacinamide. These products are hard to find in the US, and when they do exist, they're often two or three times the price — stock up when you can.

② Acne Patches — Emergency Response

Hydrocolloid patches absorb fluid from an active pimple and help it heal faster. Thick patches → nighttime intensive treatment. Thin patches → daytime coverage. Keep both types ready. Mighty Patch Original is the most recommended US option while you wait for your Korea trip — absorbs fluid, speeds healing, and stops you from touching it.

③ Moisturizer — Don't Skip This Step

Skipping moisturizer because you have oily skin actually makes things worse — your skin compensates by producing more sebum. Look for "oil-free" and "non-comedogenic" on the label. A lightweight water-based formula won't clog pores and hydrates without making acne worse.

A Story from the Shop

"Jiwon, I'm heading to Korea next month — what should I pick up at Olive Young?"

A client of mine asked me this before her trip home. She came back with a salicylic acid serum, thick patches, and a non-comedogenic moisturizer. A few weeks later: "My skin is noticeably better."

There's nothing magic about it. When you know what you're looking for and catch breakouts early, the results follow.

Quick Reference by Skin Situation

Frequent breakouts
Salicylic acid serum + thick overnight patches. Speed matters — the sooner you respond, the less damage it does.
Post-acne dark spots
Niacinamide serum + SPF 50+. Sunscreen is non-negotiable — UV exposure makes dark spots darker and slows fading dramatically. ROUND LAB Birch Juice Sun Stick SPF 50+ is lightweight, no white cast, and easy to reapply — the one I personally use every day.
Prevention
Gentle cleanser + oil-free moisturizer. Prevention is always easier than treatment — especially if getting to a dermatologist is difficult.

The Bottom Line

Two things matter most: look at the ingredients, and act early. You don't need an expensive routine. You need the right ingredients, used consistently, at the right time. Whether you're shopping at Olive Young next month or finding alternatives today — the ingredients are the same.
